How to Become an NCCIA Officer: Degree, Age and Steps
Last checked against official sources on
The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) is Pakistan's federal agency for cybercrime. It is new, it is short of staff, and it is hiring at several levels at once. That makes it one of the best federal agencies to aim for if you are interested in investigation, IT or law.
There is no single "NCCIA officer" exam. You can join at different ranks, each with its own degree, age limit and recruitment route. This guide explains every entry point, which degree suits which rank, the age limits, the physical standards, and the exact steps from today to your first posting.
What NCCIA does
NCCIA investigates crimes committed through computers, phones and the internet. Its cases include:
- Online banking and financial fraud, fake investment apps and Ponzi schemes
- Hacking and unauthorised access to accounts and systems
- Blackmail, harassment and the spreading of private images on social media
- Identity theft, fake profiles and SIM-related fraud
- Illegal call centres that cheat people in Pakistan or abroad
NCCIA was set up in 2024 to take over the cybercrime work of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The FIA's Cyber Crime Wing was dissolved and its functions moved to NCCIA, which works under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), as amended in 2025. It falls under the Ministry of Interior.
The agency is led by a Director General. Since September 2026, this has been Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, a BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), who took over from Syed Khurram Ali.
The five ways to join NCCIA
| Route | Ranks | Recruited by | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Direct recruitment (lower ranks) | Constable, Constable Driver (BS-5) | NCCIA through NPF-TAS | Matric pass, 18 to 25 |
| 2. Direct recruitment (middle ranks) | ASI (BS-9), Sub Inspector (BS-14), Technical Assistant (BS-14) | NCCIA through NPF-TAS | Graduates, especially in IT fields |
| 3. Officer posts through FPSC | Inspector (BS-16), Assistant Director (BS-17), Deputy Director (BS-18) | Expected through FPSC | Graduates and professionals; not yet advertised |
| 4. Deputation | DSP, Inspector, SI, ASI, Constable | Borrowed from provincial police | Serving police officers |
| 5. Police Service of Pakistan | Senior command posts | CSS exam, then posting | CSS candidates who choose the PSP group |
Routes 1 and 2 were used in the August 2026 recruitment drive. Route 3 is expected next. Routes 4 and 5 are for people already in service or aiming for the CSS.
Which entry level fits you?
Use your qualification and age to find your starting point:
| Your situation | Best entry point |
|---|---|
| Matric (2nd division), aged 18 to 25 | Constable (BS-5), or Constable Driver if you have motorcycle and LTV licences |
| Intermediate, with shorthand or typing skills | Stenotypist (BS-14) or Upper Division Clerk (BS-11) |
| Bachelor's or Associate Degree (2nd class) | ASI (BS-9) or Sub Inspector (BS-14) |
| BS in Computer Science, IT, Cyber Security or a related field | Sub Inspector (BS-14) or Technical Assistant (BS-14), then Inspector or Assistant Director through FPSC |
| LLB, with legal practice | Assistant Director (Legal) when advertised |
| 16-year degree, aged up to about 28 to 30 | Inspector (BS-16) or Assistant Director (BS-17) through FPSC |
| Serving police officer | Deputation to NCCIA |
| Preparing for CSS | Choose the Police Service of Pakistan group |
Degree: what to study
There is no special "NCCIA degree". But NCCIA's 2026 advertisement makes clear which subjects it values.
For the Sub Inspector (BS-14) post in 2026, applicants needed one of:
- A Bachelor's degree (2nd class or Grade C), or
- An Associate Degree or a 4-year BS in Computer Science, IT, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Digital Forensics, Telecom or Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or an equivalent HEC-recognised field
What this means for your choice of degree:
- If you are still choosing a degree: BS Computer Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Digital Forensics or Data Science gives you the widest choice of NCCIA posts, now and later.
- If you already have a general BA or BSc (2nd class): you are still eligible for ASI and Sub Inspector posts. Add short IT courses (networking, cybersecurity basics, digital forensics) to strengthen your interview and your work later.
- If you have an LLB: watch for Assistant Director (Legal) and Deputy Director (Legal) posts. These usually ask for post-qualification experience in legal practice or prosecution.
- If you have only Matric: the Constable route is open. Many police officers rise through the ranks, and a degree completed later can help with promotion and future applications.
Division and grade matter. Most posts ask for at least a 2nd class or Grade C degree. Third division results are not accepted.
Age limits
| Route | Age limit |
|---|---|
| NPF-TAS posts (Constable to Sub Inspector), 2026 | 18 to 25 years, plus 5 years of general relaxation (up to 30) |
| FPSC posts (Inspector, Assistant Director) | Set in each advertisement; FPSC adds 5 years of general relaxation, plus other relaxations below |
| Deputation from provincial police (2026 request) | Under 48 years |
FPSC's age relaxations (from its General Instructions, updated 12 August 2026):
- 5 years of general relaxation for everyone
- 10 years for serving government employees with 2 years' continuous service, up to age 55
- 15 years, or the years actually served, whichever is less, for retired or released armed forces personnel
- 5 years for the widow, son or daughter of a federal civil servant who died in service
- 3 years for candidates from Scheduled Castes, Buddhist communities, recognised tribes of tribal areas, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan
Age is counted on the closing date of the advertisement. Use our Age Relaxation Calculator to check your exact age with relaxation.
If you are 24 or 25 now, the next NPF-TAS round may be your best chance at the lower ranks. If you are older, the FPSC officer posts or the government employee relaxation may still keep you eligible.
Physical standards
NCCIA's field posts need a physical test. The 2026 advertisement, as reported, set these standards for Sub Inspector, ASI, Constable and Constable Driver:
| Standard | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 5 ft 6 in | 5 ft 4 in |
| Chest | 33 in, expanding to 34.5 in | Not required |
| Run | 1.6 km in 7 minutes | 1.6 km in 10 minutes |
Office posts such as Stenotypist and Upper Division Clerk did not have a running test. Standards for Inspector and Assistant Director will be set in the FPSC advertisement.
The physical test usually comes before the written test, and it is pass or fail. There is no relaxation in height or running time, so a few centimetres or seconds can end your application. Start running at least six weeks before the test.
Step-by-step: from today to joining
Step 1: Choose your entry rank
Match your degree, age and fitness to the table above. If you qualify for two levels (for example ASI and Sub Inspector), you can apply for both. NPF-TAS charges a separate fee for each post.
Step 2: Check your documents
Get these ready before any advertisement appears:
- Matric certificate (proof of date of birth)
- Intermediate and degree certificates, with result cards
- Domicile certificate in your own name (for the federal quota)
- CNIC (check the expiry date)
- Driving licences, if you will apply as Constable Driver
- Departmental permission (NOC), if you are a government employee
Our Document Checklist helps you prepare these.
Step 3: Train for the physical test
- Practise a timed 1.6 km run twice a week. Male candidates need about 4 minutes 22 seconds per kilometre.
- Measure your height and chest honestly. If you are below the standard, no training will change it, and you should focus on posts without physical standards.
Step 4: Prepare for the written test
For NPF-TAS posts, prepare English, general knowledge, current affairs, Pakistan studies, Islamic studies, basic maths, and computer and IT basics. For FPSC officer posts, the 2026 rules for BS-16 and BS-17 are one 100-mark MCQ paper of 100 minutes, with a 40% pass mark and 0.25 negative marking.
Add cybercrime basics for every level: the main offences under PECA, phishing, hacking, online fraud methods, and simple networking terms. See our NCCIA Jobs 2026 guide for a subject table and sample MCQs, and our NCCIA Inspector and Assistant Director guide for the FPSC pattern.
Step 5: Apply on the official portal only
- NPF-TAS posts: apply at npftas.pk. In 2026 the fee was Rs. 2,000 per post, paid through a 1Link PSID.
- FPSC posts: apply at fpsc.gov.pk. The fee for BS-16 and BS-17 posts is Rs. 600, paid through a PSID.
Never pay an agent, WhatsApp group or "consultant" who promises a seat.
Step 6: Pass each stage of selection
Physical test, then written or computer-based test, then interview or final evaluation, then character and medical checks.
Step 7: Training and posting
Selected candidates are appointed, trained and posted to NCCIA offices. Because NCCIA has circles and offices across the country, be ready to serve outside your home city.
What happens in the selection process
NPF-TAS posts (August 2026 drive):
- Online application and fee
- Physical measurement and 1.6 km run (field posts)
- Computer-based or written test
- Final evaluation and merit list under the federal quota system, including provincial, gender and minority quotas
FPSC officer posts (FPSC's rules for BS-16 and BS-17):
- Online application and fee
- One MCQ test: 100 marks, 100 minutes, 40% to pass, 0.25 negative marking
- Shortlisting: usually 3 to 5 candidates per post are called
- Document verification, one day before the interview
- Interview out of 200 marks, with 101 needed to pass
- Final merit is the total of test and interview marks
Current status of NCCIA recruitment (October 2026)
| Recruitment | Status |
|---|---|
| 351 posts (Constable to Sub Inspector) through NPF-TAS | Applications closed in September 2026. Tests are conducted by NPF-TAS; check npftas.pk for roll number slips and dates |
| Inspector (BS-16) and Assistant Director (BS-17) | Proposed, expected through FPSC; not advertised as of 31 October 2026 |
| Deputation from Punjab Police | In October 2026, NCCIA asked Punjab Police for 300 officers and staff on deputation |
| Deputation from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police | NCCIA also asked the KP government for 200 officers |
The deputation request shows how short of staff NCCIA is. According to reports, NCCIA asked Punjab Police for 30 DSPs, 30 Inspectors, 115 Sub Inspectors, 25 ASIs and 100 Head Constables and Constables. Its conditions were: under 48 years of age, physically fit, at least a BA or ICS, a clean reputation and an A-grade service record, and no serious conviction or pending inquiry.
If you are already in Punjab or KP Police and meet these conditions, ask your office about the deputation process. It is the fastest route into NCCIA for serving officers.
The officer-level pipeline. NCCIA's request for new posts included 133 Inspectors, 31 Assistant Directors (Investigation), about 19 Assistant Directors in legal, forensic and other fields, and 18 Deputy Directors. These still need final approval and an advertisement, and the numbers may change.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for the advertisement to start preparing. Application windows are often two or three weeks, and the running test can follow soon after.
- Ignoring the physical standards. Many candidates with good degrees fail the run or the height check.
- Applying with the wrong grade or division. A third division degree does not meet the 2nd class requirement.
- Missing the age cut-off by days. Age is counted on the closing date, not on the day you apply.
- Applying through fake links. NCCIA's direct recruitment in 2026 was only through npftas.pk, and officer posts are expected only through fpsc.gov.pk.
- Government employees applying without an NOC. FPSC cancels the application if the departmental permission details are missing.
