How clerical and support posts are filled

Clerical and support vacancies exist in every department, court, board, hospital and district office in the country, and they are almost always filled by the advertising body itself rather than through a public service commission. The cadres are standard across the public sector: Naib Qasid, Junior and Lower Division Clerk, Upper Division Clerk, Assistant, Stenotypist, Stenographer, Data Entry Operator, Store Keeper and Dispatch Rider.

Requirements follow the cadre closely. Support posts usually ask for Middle or Matriculation. Clerical posts ask for Matriculation or Intermediate together with a typing speed, commonly around thirty to forty words per minute, and a computer literacy test in most departments now. Stenotypist and Stenographer posts add a shorthand speed, typically eighty words per minute or more, which is tested practically and is the stage most candidates are eliminated at.

Selection is normally the practical typing or shorthand test first, then a written paper, then an interview. These cadres sit in the lower and middle Basic Pay Scales, and several have been upgraded in recent years, so the grade printed on an older advertisement may not match a current one. District and zone quotas apply to most of these posts, which means the domicile on your certificate usually decides which advertisements you are eligible for at all.
