How IT and computer posts are recruited

IT vacancies in the public sector come from a wider mix of bodies than most categories: the federal Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and its attached departments, the provincial information technology boards, NADRA, the Pakistan Software Export Board, digital and cybercrime authorities, and the IT wings of ordinary departments, universities and hospitals. Many are created under specific digitisation programmes, so the advertising body is often a project office rather than a department.

Officer and engineer cadres normally require a four-year BS or BSc in computer science, software engineering, information technology or a closely related discipline from an HEC-recognised university, and senior posts add an MS or years of documented experience with named technologies. Operator and support cadres - Data Entry Operator, Computer Operator - usually ask for Intermediate or a Bachelor's degree with a typing speed and a computer literacy test.

Selection frequently includes a technical or practical component alongside the written paper, and senior posts are often decided by a selection board weighing a portfolio of delivered work. Pay is the part worth reading carefully: regular posts sit on Basic Pay Scales, but a large share of public-sector IT roles are advertised on management or market-based scales with a fixed contract term. The two are not comparable, so check what the post actually offers before assuming a grade.
