Legal vacancies come from the law and parliamentary affairs departments, the provincial prosecution departments, the offices of the Advocate General and Attorney General, the district judiciary, and the legal wings of departments, authorities and public companies. Judicial posts follow their own route: Civil Judge-cum-Judicial Magistrate is recruited by competitive examination conducted for the High Court, usually through the provincial public service commission, and is not a departmental appointment.
Practising cadres require an LLB together with enrolment as an advocate with the relevant Bar Council, and most add a stated number of years of active practice - two years for many entry-level prosecutor and law officer posts, more for senior ones. An LLM or a specialisation is an advantage rather than a requirement in most advertisements. Court support cadres such as Bailiff, Process Server and Reader are separate, and normally ask for Matriculation or Intermediate.
Selection for law officer and prosecutor posts is usually a written paper on substantive and procedural law followed by an interview; judicial competitive examinations are considerably longer, with multiple written papers, a viva and a strict age band. Officer cadres sit at BPS-17 and above, with the judiciary on its own scale. Where an advertisement states a minimum period of practice, it is counted from the date of enrolment and evidenced by the Bar Council certificate.
