Applying through the Federal Public Service Commission

The Federal Public Service Commission recruits for the federal government: the ministries and divisions, their attached departments and subordinate offices. Like the provincial commissions it does not employ anyone itself, so an FPSC advertisement names the ministry or department the post belongs to. It also conducts the Central Superior Services competitive examination, which is a different process from ordinary recruitment - multiple written papers, a medical, a psychological assessment and a viva.

Ordinary posts are advertised in numbered consolidated advertisements issued through the year, each covering many unrelated posts across different ministries. Applications go in online through the Commission's website, with the fee paid by challan; each post carries its own case number and its own closing date, even within one advertisement. Eligibility is assessed as at the closing date, and the Commission's own recruitment rules govern what counts as an equivalent qualification.

Most posts are decided by a screening or objective test, with some cadres adding a professional or descriptive paper, followed by an interview before a selection board. Federal posts are filled against a regional allocation distributing seats between the provinces, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, with a portion on open merit - so domicile determines which share you compete within. Test dates, roll number slips and results are published on the Commission's website.
