How age is counted against a limit

An upper limit of N years means you must not have reached your Nth birthday on the date age is counted. Turning N on that very date makes you over-age by one day.

PPSC's own example: for an upper limit of 28, a candidate born on 1 January 1988 is over-age by one day on 1 January 2016 - PPSC counts the day of birth as a day. FPSC's CSS rules draw the line in the same place.

Each commission's own rules are on its page below.

How it works

  1. Your age is counted on the closing date of the advertisement, in years, months and days - the date recruiters use unless the advertisement names another one.
  2. The upper age limit is the one in the advertisement. If the advertisement says the general relaxation is already included, it is not added again.
  3. Relaxations you qualify for are added only when the advertisement or the rules it follows allow them, and each one needs its proof at scrutiny.
  4. If something cannot be worked out with certainty, the result says so and sends you to the advertisement rather than guessing.

Common mistakes

  • Counting your age on the day the advertisement was published. Age is reckoned on the closing date for applications unless the advertisement names another date.
  • Using a different date of birth from the one on your Matric certificate and CNIC. Recruiters go by your documents; if they differ, sort that out first.
  • Adding the general relaxation yourself when the advertisement says the age limit already includes it. It is then counted only once.
  • Assuming a relaxation applies without the proof. A relaxation that is not proved with the document the advertisement asks for is refused at scrutiny.

Frequently asked questions

On which date is my age counted?

On the closing date for applications, unless the advertisement names another date. Your age on the day the advertisement was published does not decide it.

Can I add general age relaxation to any advertised age limit?

Only when the advertisement does not already include it. Many advertisements say the upper limit already includes the general relaxation; then it is counted once, not twice.

Is a relaxation automatic?

No. A relaxation applies only when the advertisement or the rules it follows allow it, and you must prove it with the document the advertisement asks for.
